The Women of Hamlet Take Center Stage at WICA!
Step into the royal court of Denmark like never before as Whidbey Island Center for the Arts proudly presents Lauren Gunderson’s A Room in the Castle. This daring new play flips Shakespeare’s classic on its head, giving voice and agency to the iconic women of Hamlet—Gertrude, Ophelia, and Anna—whose stories are reimagined with wit, resilience, and heart.
Directed by Rose Woods (The Revolutionists, Justice), this West Coast premiere invites you to see history through a fresh lens and celebrate the strength and complexity of women who have too long lingered in the shadows.
Bringing these powerful characters to life are:
Marta Mulholland as Gertrude
Valerie Huntington as Ophelia
JRob as Anna
Join us for an unforgettable opening night on June 20, complete with a specialty gin, lavender, lemon, and elderflower cocktail, “The Sanctuary.” Performances run through June 29 as part of WICA’s New Works Festival, which champions bold new voices and fresh narratives.
Don’t miss this inspired retelling that promises laughter, intrigue, and a powerful reminder that every story deserves to be heard.
