The South Whidbey Jazz Trio, featuring South Whidbey natives Ruari Keith on bass, Bjorn Jengel on drums, and Ethan Heather Ford on keys, brings a unique blend of jazz and funk/fusion to their performances. The trio, who met as members of the South Whidbey High School Jazz Band under the direction of Chris Harshman, have been playing together since high school. They have been featured in the South Whidbey Jazz Residency at WICA and have performed in numerous groups around the island.

Ruari is studying Computer Science at Shoreline Community College, Bjorn is studying Audio Engineering at Shoreline Community College, and Ethan is studying Jazz at Berklee College of Music. Their musical inspirations include Vulfpeck, Radiohead, and Jaco Pastorius. Notably, Ethan Heather Ford, a WICA Bridge Family Scholarship winner, is home on winter break from his first year at Berklee School of Music.

Pinky (Jeanne Crain) is a black woman so fair-skinned she was able to pose as white throughout nursing school. Newly graduated, she flees south to visit her grandmother (Ethel Waters) after a doctor, unaware of her true ancestry, proposes to her. Unsure how to react, she looks to her grandmother, who warns her that only trouble will come of an interracial marriage. Pinky agrees and instead stays to help her grandmother care for an elderly, rich, and fatally ill white woman (Ethel Barrymore).

Eleonora Karpukhova, an Associate Professor at the prestigious Tchaikovsky Conservatory of Music and a winner of numerous international competitions, began her musical journey at the age of 5 in Kazan. Hailed as "the finest pianist of her generation in the Conservatory," she is a celebrated artist in Russia, often enriching her performances with master classes. Her talent has captivated audiences across Europe, South America, and the United States since 2014. With four CDs of Rachmaninov's music and several other recordings, she recently completed an eight-concert series at the Conservatory, featuring all of Rachmaninov's solo piano works in honor of his 150th birth anniversary.

Karen is further annoyed when one of them turns out to be her father. Even though Henry keeps showing up at home every day more disheveled and beaten up, he couldn't be happier. Henry is convinced he's found his life's work, and Westport, Connecticut, is safer for it.

Django’s Birthday on Whidbey Hot Club Swing Musicians Come Together to Celebrate Their Hero Hot Club Swing musicians from around Puget Sound are coming together to celebrate Django Reinhardt’s 115th birthday! The concert will feature Ranger and the ‘Re-Arrangers’, plus several guest soloists will join the band for a few tunes each. Django was an itinerant Romani guitarist who earned international acclaim in the 1930’s. Many of his compositions became jazz classics and he is considered one of the top guitar soloists of all time. Duke Ellington called Django “the most creative jazz musician to originate anywhere outside the United States.” Decades later, Jerry Garcia said, “Nobody has really come to the state that he was playing at…nobody plays with the whole fullness of expression that Django had.” Ranger and the ‘Re-Arrangers’ evoke the spirit of a Paris cafe and the raucous energy of a Romani campsite. The evening will feature songs from their repertoire of swing standards, traditional European melodies, and of course, several of Django’s compositions. Says violinist Ranger Sciacca: “Our goal is to make this a fun variety show, featuring as many great musicians and different instruments as we can!” Adding to the night’s excitement, Alex Dugdale, a force of nature on the saxophone, will electrify audiences with performances that blend classic jazz vibes with a fresh, contemporary edge. Hailed by Earshot Jazz for his trailblazing contributions to music and education, Alex is known for pushing the envelope. He is also preparing to release recordings with the 10-piece world funk sensation Deca-Dance and the Alex Dugdale Big Band.

Karla Bonoff has been described as one of the finest singersongwriters of her generation. That description is not hyperbole. Bonoff has enjoyed critical acclaim, commercial success, enduring popularity, and the unwavering respect of her peers. Karla has seen her songs become hits for Bonnie Raitt, Wynonna Judd, and Linda Ronstadt. Many of Bonoff’s ballads are classics. Karla has continued to record and tour extensively, playing sold-out shows around the world.

Portland Taiko | Mission and History | Through innovation and excellence in taiko, Portland Taiko affirms Asian American pride, inspires audiences, builds community, and educates about our heritage and culture.

Welcome to a special event at the Whidbey Island Center for the Arts! We are thrilled to present Portland Taiko, a dynamic group that masterfully blends the tradition of Japanese taiko drumming with a vibrant sense of Asian American identity, creativity, and empowerment.

Founded in 1994 by Ann Ishimaru, Zachary Semke, and Japanese American community activists, Portland Taiko began with humble beginnings—one homemade taiko and practice drums made from car tires. With the support of their community, they have grown tremendously, presenting their first full-length concert in 1997, becoming a non-profit organization, and touring North America in the early 2000s.

Portland Taiko has headlined at arts festivals and concert halls, released three CDs, and performed at hundreds of community events and school assemblies. They have collaborated with numerous artists, including Hanayui, Shohei Kikuchi, Seiichi Tanaka, Kenny Endo, Tiffany Tamaribuchi, Subashini Ganesan, Obo Addy, Sivagami Vanka, Carla Mann, Mike Barber, and Minh Tran.

With the help of a colorful and tight-knit Jewish community, Tevye tries to protect his daughters and instill them with traditional values in the face of changing social mores and the growing anti-Semitism of Czarist Russia. Rich in historical and ethnic detail, Fiddler on the Roof's universal theme of tradition cuts across barriers of race, class, nationality, and religion, leaving audiences crying tears of laughter, joy, and sadness.

Irish Fiddler Kevin Burke has been at the forefront of traditional music since the 1970’s. Born in London, his Irish parents instilled in him a love for the music of their homeland. Heavily influenced by older generations of musicians, both in Ireland and his native London, the teen age Kevin became a well known figure at folk clubs, ceilis and pub sessions.

After 6 months working with Det Danske Teater in Denmark, a 1972 chance meeting with Arlo Guthrie in the West of Ireland resulted in an invitation to visit USA. While there Kevin worked on Arlo’s upcoming recording, The Last of the Brooklyn Cowboys.

Having returned from America, Kevin was then invited to join Christy Moore’s new band and, after a couple of happy years playing with Christy, he was then asked to join the recently formed Bothy Band.

Born of a session in Paisley, Scotland, and named for the town's historic weaving industry and local poet laureate Robert Tannahill, the Tannahill Weavers have made an international name for their special brand of Celtic music, blending the beauty of traditional melodies with the power of modern rhythms. As one of the world's premier traditional Celtic bands, their diverse repertoire spans the centuries with fire-driven instrumentals, topical songs, original ballads and lullabies, and humorous tales of life in Scotland.

In 2021, they have been joined by exciting piper and fiddle player Iain MacGillivray, who is also Scotland's youngest Clan leader. Iain, a fluent Gaelic speaker, has worked on such exciting productions as Outlander and Men in Kilts and has performed for a huge list of stars and dignitaries in recent years. As the band celebrates the nomination of their 18th recording, Òrach (“Golden” in Gaelic), as album of the year and themselves as a band of the year, they are firmly established as one of the premier groups on the concert stage. From reflective ballads to foot-stomping reels and jigs, the variety and range of the material they perform are matched only by their enthusiasm and lively Celtic spirits.

The Katie Jane Band shares their dynamic stage performance at Celtic festivals, Scottish Highland Games, and theaters up and down the West Coast. Some notable performances include performing at the Pleasanton Scottish Gathering, headlining the Celtic Fantasy Faire in Portland, OR, headlining the Douglas County Scottish Highland Games, performing the live music for Artist Repertory Theater's production of the Scottish play, "The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart," and producing their multi-media productions with the Celtic Light Orchestra.

Heartfelt Energetic Celtic Rock Derina Harvey leads the multi-award winning Derina Harvey Band (dHb). Recently taking home the 2024 East Coast Music Award for Fans’ Choice Entertainer of the Year, this Celtic Rock group has a live show that leaves audiences hollering from their seats. Derina’s vibrant personality takes centre stage with her humour, engaging storytelling, and powerful vocals all backed by an amazing instrumental ensemble and rich blend of harmonies. The group has already received two nominations for the 2025 Canadian Folk Music Awards for “Contemporary Singer of the Year” and “New/Emerging Artist of the Year”. dHb concerts are suitable for all ages and can be adapted for any venue; a captivating night of storytelling through song in a Performing Arts Center, or a dinner and dance in a community hall.

It’s time for another Whidbey Jazz Residency (WJR) show, and that means two nights of amazing Jazz, Funk and Latin music! This group of internationally acclaimed musicians all have individual music careers and they come together as WJR to put on these fun, energetic and artistic shows. As always, special guests are sure
to be present, and each show is different. Come enjoy a night (or two) that will have you already looking forward to the next time!
WJR core is: Roy Gabelein (drums), Keegan Harshman (bass), Grant Neubauer (piano, keys), Troy Chapman (Guitar), Danny Ward (sax), and Eric Vanderbilt-Mathews (keys, sax, clarinet).

Liberace & Liza Minnelli never performed together, but that didn’t stop David Saffert & Jillian Snow from creating this wildly successful mashup of two over-the-top icons. Saffert’s dizzying piano skills and Snow’s powerhouse belt team up in Cabaret, New York, Over the Rainbow, The Man That Got Away plus surprise covers by Lady Gaga and Britney Spears. There are as many laughs as there are sequins when Liberace & Liza take hilarious (and sometimes mischievous) turns vying for the spotlight. No matter what, they both come out winning and audiences are left in awe, humming and quoting a night they’ll not soon forget.

Gardens were an important motif of early Impressionist art, featuring prominently in the works of Monet, Renoir, Morisot and Cassatt. Much later in his career, Monet would create a garden at his home in Giverny, where he installed the famous Japanese bridge over a pond of waterlilies and painted them gloriously in his final decades.

Authors, YouTubers, and disability advocates Shane and Hannah Burcaw share a hilarious and heartfelt presentation about the reality of being in an interabled relationship, including some highlights and lowlights from their own personal love story. Their intention is to identify and debunk the damaging misconceptions and stigmas that society holds about disability. Their first co-authored book Interabled will be released in January 2025 and available for purchase at the event.
